Dr Gareth Owen
Dr Owen is a Specialist Colorectal Surgeon. He completed his medical degree in 1999 through the University of Sydney and then obtained his FRACS (Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons) in 2007. Dr Owen then completed 3 years of subspecialist Colorectal training at St Vincents Hospital, Prince of Wales Hospital and Concord Hospitals. Following that he spent time enhancing his minimally invasive (Robotic) Colorectal Surgical skills in both Hong Kong and Korea, two of the then leading Robotic centres worldwide. He is a member of the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand (CSSANZ) and the Gastroenterological Society of Australia.
Dr Owen has been operating at St Vincents Hospital in Sydney since 2010 as a Specialist Colorectal Surgeon. He has a particular interest in managing Colorectal Cancer , complex diverticular disease and Inflammatory Bowel Disease including Crohns disease and Ulcerative Colitis. He has been a leading surgical member of the St Vincents Inflammatory Bowel Disease Unit and it's multi-disciplinary meeting since it's introduction in 2011. He has, through this involvement, become one of the highest volume IBD surgeons in Sydney and one of the most experienced Ileo-anal J pouch surgeons.
In addition to his Colorectal Surgical expertise, Dr Owen has developed a very high volume hernia repair practice and is well trained in various techniques of complex abdominal wall hernia repair and reconstruction. He has been involved in numerous complex trauma cases that have required complex abdominal reconstruction techniques to help patients recover.
Finally, Dr Owen offers a comprehensive screening service for Colorectal Cancer with easy access to, and a short wait time for, his colonoscopy lists.
Dr Owen is currently the Supervisor of Colorectal Training at St Vincents Hospital and has previously been the Surgical Supervisor for the Eastern NSW Surgical Network of General Surgical Training.
